History  |   About Jesus  |   Becoming a Christian

The Glad Tidings Church, as it was to be called, would hold its first public assembly in a store front facility already rented at 155 Henry Street in Hempstead on February 11th, 1940.

Kenneth Solberg, one of the founders, would be named the first pastor. On August18th, 1940, twelve new members were added to the existing six charter members and the first official church board was formed - Kenneth Solberg, Pastor(Chairman); William Borst Treasurer; and Edward Newman, Secretary; Bros.Kjono,Chibunko and Kroslowitz completed the six member Board. The final incorporation papers of the Glad Tidings were signed January 31st, 1943. in 1944, the church joined with the Eastern Hudson Valley District of the Assemblies of God, which would later form the New Jersey and New York Districts of the Assemblies of God, as they are known today. In 1945, the church moved from Henry Street to the Junior Order Hall on Prospect Street in Hempstead.

On January 8th ,1946 the church purchased a piece of property valued at $3,040.00 for $900.00. The land was surveyed on May 28th, 1946, and an architect was instructed to draw up the plans for a structure which would one be the sanctuary currently located at 656 Front Street, Hempstead.

In July 1953, the church name was changed to Assembly of God church of Hempstead and in October of the same year, a ground breaking ceremony marked for History, the commencement of the construction of the new sanctuary, which was officially dedicated, Sunday, January 30th, 1955.

Today, our Sanctuary building has been expanded to accommodate our church class rooms and lobby area.

Having capsulized the history of the physical development of the assembly we acknowledge the faithfulness of God, for indeed it is His work. We also recognize that physical growth without spiritual growth - is vanity! Every inch of progress every step and phase of development in the Kingdom of God is borne to of stedfast prayer and intercession and spiritual motivation. We thank God each of the Pastors, the spiritual motivators, each "man of the hour", building on the foundation laid in that home meeting on Janury 27th, 1940, and the greater foundation - which is Christ Jesus.
